mayor of Washington, DC in 1990. Washington, DC was at a difficult
cross road with looming deficits, spiraling crime, strained
relations with Congress, etc. Nonetheless, during her tenure, she
advanced and sustained reform across all spheres of government.
From establishing the winning formula for addressing District's
unfunded pension liability, to right-sizing government, to
attaining Congressional commitment for a federal payment formula,
to addressing the structural deficit, emergency response to
storms, automation of government, comprehensive-coordinated
initiatives for City's youth, restoring the City's trees,
recruiting a NBA team to downtown Washington and identifying the
tract of land to house the MCI (now Verizon) Center - which fueled
revival of downtown Washington, welcoming international soccer to
the City, and much, much more. Her team re-engineered the
structure of government, establishing new effective paradigms
throughout government, and prepared the city for the challenges
and opportunities of the 21st century.
